Mike,

Port Glasgow Swimming Baths date from the late 1800s, and my memories of 
them go back to the 40s, when there was always the Bathsmaster in attendance 
when the pool was open.  This didn't stop a young chap who lived near me 
from drowning, but I can't recall another such incident. The only "swimming 
pool" I was ever in at sea was on Chakdara or Chilka - a square canvas box 
about 18" deep filled with SW. It went out of vogue pretty quicky and was 
dismantled.  One lay in it and splashed with abandon, getting the deck wet.
