Mike,

Forts built to repel smaller aircraft flying in to attack Great Britain? 
It's the bigger ones that were the problem, as I recall, and the ones that 
bombed us sure as hell weren't going to fly over or round these forts and 
all the way north just for the pleasure of the scenery en-route. Which route 
they took I cannot say, but they got here.  I've copies of the aerial survey 
photos they took in 1938 - all the shipyards and engineering works, etc, 
outlined in blackand named in neat print.  All except John G Kincaid for 
some reason.  But it isn't an easy area to bomb accurately, so we got off 
relatively lightly, though the 500 odd who were killed wouldn't agree. The 
moors south of us got a pounding, as did the river north of us.
