This from a rig manager friend of mine..................

It is the same old incident which happens again and again. When you use the tongs against a top drive motor , which in most cases is minimal 800 H.P., you gently ease the pipe against the tong . This establishes a bite, then you let everyone get out of the way. You get everyone away from the recoil direction of the snatch block and the tong. The proof load of a six inch snatch bloak is @ 36,000 lbs. This looks like an eight inch, so we could adjust downward to @ 25,000 lbs. For this block to fail, I estimate it probably had @ 50,000 ft lbs torque applied. I have personally seen 75,000 lbs of force applied to McKissick six inch with no failure. We of course have already been shown this through xxxx and BP and will have to respond officially. It does not matter how modern and technological any rig is, the basics of rigging must always be understood and safeguards , especially in regard to human safety, be observed.
