Colin,
Sharia law in the UK has the same legal standing as all other religious laws in the UK, ie, none whatever. Some Christian sects in Scotland (and elsewhere in the UK, for all I know) impose rules on their members, eg, regarding what it is permitted to do on Sundays, and they are not above putting pressure on local and national government in support of their views. In the not too distant past, the Kirk Sessions of the Church of Scotland had a semi-legal status, imposing fines on members and otherwise punishing bad behaviour. Other Christian sects, eg, Jehovah's Witnesses and Plymouth Brethren, not to forget the Mormons, impose strict rules on their members. Sharia Law differs only in its scope.
Hugh.
