Hugh,

That class of ship had a design fault just ford of the Bridge, they suffered fractures in the longitudinal frames, they were OBO class vessels.  Remember the Kowloon Bridge.

However in this case you were right in that she took water for'd causing her to trim for,d then the hatches Nos. 1 & 2 were stove in by the sea and she would then have nosedived, she was full of Iron Ore.
