Colin,

In the early days, before literacy was invented, engineers were sometimes enginners, also enjinners and often ingeneers - and as long as they could hold a spanner and sharpen a chisel at 50 degrees, the spelling didn't matter too much. Once literacy came in, however, the other spellings became an embarrassment and were forced to go to sea, mostly with BI. True.
