Oddities like curling, so say the NY Times. A million people play curling in Canada, and a helluva lot in the USA and Europe and Asia. The real oddities are those to whom the roaring game is a mystery, yet they feel impelled to write egregious twaddle about sweeping and, by extension, the people who play and enjoy curling.

Curling, even the indoor variety invented by the Canadians, is a winter game. In Scotland, its birthplace, it was originally played in farming districts, and the winter was the off season for farming. September to April is the curling season.

And while I'm on oddities, shinty is played in some places in England, notably Cornwall.

Hugh.
