> BBC (Brussels Broadcasting Company) - Bomber Command Memorial Coverage 28th June 2012, or Lack of!
>
> After the lackluster coverage of the Diamond Jubilee, the BBC has now insulted the Veteran's of WW2 Bomber Command, their Families and the Fundraisers who raised over 6 Million Pounds, by not showing the unveiling of the long awaited Memorial.
>
>
> Instead "Auntie" will be showing repeats or Tennis, great if your a Sports fan, but surely the loss of 55,573 killed out of a total of 125,000 aircrew, and commemorating them and all who served in Bomber Command should be higher on the TV Listings, a further 8,403 were wounded in action and 9,838 became prisoners of war.
>
>
> Perhaps not paying our TV Licence fees might just give them a Jolt, after all can they really jail a Non Fee payer when they can't even jail hardened criminals!
>
>
> Or we can do something British, we can write to Auntie and let them know exactly how we feel.

> RAF units to remain at Scampton
>
>
> It has been announced that RAF Scampton is to remain the base for the RAF Aerobatic Team (RAFAT) - also known as the Red Arrows - and the RAF’s Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS).
>
> The Royal Air Force had planned to relocate the ASACS infrastructure, as part of wider force restructuring, from RAF Scampton in advance of the 2014 drawdown date of the station.
>
> In a written statement to the House of Commons, Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey said:
>
> "However, we have now identified that, due to cost and capability grounds, the ASACS infrastructure should remain at RAF Scampton, with any future decisions on its basing examined as part of other projects.
>
> "Additionally, the most effective way of operating RAFAT without impacting on other flying is to stay at RAF Scampton. This means that both RAFAT and the ASACS unit will be retained at the station until at least the end of the decade.
>
> "This decision does necessitate scheduled maintenance to resurface the RAF Scampton runway, and this will commence later this year."

> The moment David Cameron refuses to accept letter marked 'Malvinas' from Argentine president as she confronts him over Falklands at G20 meeting
>
> David Cameron was involved in an extraordinary stand-up discussion with Argentina's president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on 19 Jun 2012 over the future of the Falkand Islands.
>
> The Argentine leader appeared to attempt to thrust a package stuffed with documents into Mr Cameron's hands at the G20 summit in Mexico.
>
> To her fury, the Prime Minister refused to accept it - and insisted that she respect the views of the islanders, who want to remain British.
>
> Witnesses said the A4 envelope was marked 'UN/Malvinas' - a reference to Argentina's name for the islands.
>
> The Prime Minister told Mrs Kirchner: 'I am not proposing a full discussion now on the Falklands but I hope you have noted that they are holding a referendum and you should respect their views. We should believe in self-determination and act as democrats here in the G20.'
>
> Mr Cameron said later: 'I told Kirchner that if she believes in democracy then she should respect the will of the people of the Falklands, and I wanted to use this opportunity to tell her this, which I did with some vigour.'
>
> One witness said Mrs Kirchner

>
>
> If you are interested in discovering more about your ancestor's service in forces take a look at our Hire a Researcher pages. Described are the searches that can be conducted and what may be available.
>
> Below are details of two of the most popular subjects for research, First World War army personnel and Second World War Merchant Navy.

>

> It is commonly thought that if a soldiers WW1 service record has not survived that this is an end to tracing any further information on an individual. There is approximately a 35% chance of tracing any one man's record due to warehouse in which they were stored being bombed during the WW2 London blitz. A search will be made within these records. If the record does not survive this is by all means an end to finding out about your ancestor's service.
>
> In most cases one can identify a man's medal card from either his regiment, service number or by a process of elimination. From the references on the medal card we can look at the actual medal rolls. In the case of Infantry most rolls give the battalion/s in which served. Certain regiments such as the Royal Fusiliers and London Regiments give the dates of service overseas which is of great assistance in looking further into which actions he is likely to have been involved. In the case of the Royal Garrison Artillery the roll often has the last unit in which they served.
>
> If awarded the "Silver War badge" the issue roll for this may list information such as age on discharge, dates of enlistment and discharge and whether due to wounds, sickness etc.
>
> If service was with the Territorial units of the Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers or Royal Army Medical Corps and they were given a new service number in 1917 it can be possible to pin down which unit he was serving with at that point.
>
> If Killed in Action the unit War Diary is very useful. Written in the field at the time, this often gives a good detailed account of what is happening in the unit and the action in which they are involved.
>
> Depending on the regiment or which area of the country a man was from there may be further sources what can be searched. In most cases additional information can be gained without the actual records having survived.
>
>
> Commissioned Officers
>
>
> The medal card is the first item to be searched. Most of which are available. The records of service for officers are in the form of a correspondence file. Most are available if service did not continue after circa 1922. The files vary a great deal. They can include record of service in the ranks, application for commission, casualty form, medical records and correspondence to and from the officer or their next of kin if deceased. If the file is not available details of service can be extracted from the Army list and the London Gazette.

> Merchant Seamen's Service records of Second World War
>
>
> These records are in most cases available for those who served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Records for officers and crew are available including details of medals that were issued if claimed.
>
> The records are rather fragmented and can mean a search in eight or more groups of records. From 1941 the records are more complete. These show ships served, signed on and off, rank, whether sunk etc. There is also a "pouch" or envelope for many which often includes a small photograph of the individual and there Merchant Seaman's card.
>
> There records also contain details of service pre-war and in some cases to the early 1970's.
