Hugh,
Could it be that the earphones are stereo (i.e 3connections on the plug) 
and that they are being plugged into a mono socket.
I seem to remember that one could get a adaptor to get round this. If 
one right clicks on the speaker icon selects speakers/properties the 
nature of the outlet socket should be able to be seen under jack information
that's all I can think of
