I now recall that the piston driven machine was used for chamfering the edges of the lub oil holes in the diesel crankpins and journals. This was never a favourite job, for the machine was heavy, awkward to hold, and it vibrated a bit.  So why did we use it?  I've no idea, probably tradition.
