Hugh,

 

Surely the Picts & Scotii were here long before the Romans came. As I
understand it, them or the Brits were here before the channel split us from
mainland Europe. We were an island race. The Romans had to come by boat.

Malcolm,

 

I attach something to make it even more complicated. Of course, all this was
in the wake of the collapse of Roman rule - who knows who was what before
that.

 

One point - the Normans, like the Romans only less so, didn't come all that
far north, at least not in a conquering role.
