When I was still an apprentice fitter in Kincaids, we had the usual air turbine driven "hand" drills, big to small - my pal and I could drill oval holes with them.  I fell asleep on nightshift holding the biggest of them up while lying on a beam overhanging a drop of about 40 feet. Charlie Thomson, the journeyman, wasn't in the least put out. And there was one strange air machine, rather ancient looking, that operated via pistons and a crankshaft.  It did the job.
