So, the rock wasn't marked on a chart?  I'll buy that, but the absence of a
rock at position A on a chart is surely not an invitation to sail over the
spot without the knowledge that others have already done so without mishap -
at least, not in general, and not as close to shore as that.

Of course, even when the rock is marked on a chart, there are people who
will sail onto it through ignorance or carelessness.  On 1-1-1919 the HMY
Iolaire foundered yards from the shore of Lewis with an estimated 284
aboard, of whom 205 perished.
