Dave,

A few years ago, on a drive north from Harwich on a brand new hired car, just off the DFDS ferry from Esbjerg, I suddenly found myself lost on an A14 that looked to be running parallel to another A14. I hadn't had time to work out which knob was which, let alone the route, this due to a mixup that left Janet and I on one car on one A14 and daughter and son-in-law and family in another A14, rapidly diverging. Plan A had been to follow them to Corby (they were to stay there a couple of days), then on to join the M6 north. They had set off from the car hire place before I'd had time start our engine, let alone anything else. So I passed Janet the book of maps and she learned how to navigate, not without arguments. SatNav would have been useless, since our A14 became a wasteland full of road-working machinery (no people - it was Sunday). After a mile or so of bumping hopefully here and there, we were on the southernmost end of a new extension to the M1, and it was relatively plain sailing from there on, though Janet didn't think so.

Hugh.
