04/02/12 - "It's unfortunate that Barrie Quillam interprets my comments about Paul McCartney's latest CD as "anti-Beatles", writes Roy Cansdale. "Their contribution to popular music is without question- it was just so inventive and fresh that nothing else could compete (and that included Jazz music). The point I hoped to make was that the brilliant Paul McCartney has now produced a CD that is essentially 'Jazz repertoire' that predates the "Fab Four"! Roy also points out that there's more information on the Live Music Bill at http://tinyurl.com/6n9x3ud

03/01/12 - "Re: the reply to the Beatles message from Barrie Marshall, I cannot understand why many jazz musicians are so blind to the genius of The Beatles. It was not The Beatles who damaged the popularity of jazz. It was the fickle fans who deserted it for the new sound, just as years before they had deserted things like "How much is that Doggie in the Window" for "Twelfth Street Rag" by Peewee Hunt, which reached the top of the Hit Parade and introduced the general public to the Dixieland style and made them look again at New Orleans music. The Beatles as composers and performers have never been surpassed in popular music for their original tunes and lyrics, their harmonies and novel chord sequences. They ranged from comedy (When I'm 64, Maxwell's Silver Hammer etc.) to the haunting "Yesterday" with its 7 bar sequence. Their vocal harmonies were accurate and tuneful in contrast to the tuneless shouting of some of their predecessors in Pop ( and dare I say this has also existed in some jazz vocals). Come on jazzers, take of your blinkers and listen to The Beatles with an open mind and don't be so prejudiced". - Barrie Quilliam
