Yes, this is exactly how American style capitalism works – maximise profits it ANY cost, and be proud of it, better still – brag about it. Yet According to the U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday September 13, 2011, the nation's poverty rate rose to 15.1% (46.2 million) in 2010,[2] up from 14.3% (approximately 43.6 million) in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993. In 2008, 13.2% (39.8 million) Americans lived in relative poverty.[3] In 2000, the poverty rate for individuals was 12.2% and for families was 9.3%.[4]
The government's definition of poverty is based on total income received. For example, the poverty level for 2012 was set at $23,050 (total yearly income) for a family of four.[5] Most Americans (58.5%) will spend at least one year below the poverty line at some point between ages 25 and 75.[6]

Folks like this Google boss couldn’t care less!

A perfect example of of American style capitalism is mitt Romney – worth $250 million, declared yearly income about $20 million and going back years paid no income tax! [that’s about 240,000 POUNDS PER WEEK for UK pensioners.]
Because he was running for president he generously said he paid about 13% the last 2 years [his income tax return is said to be over 400 pages for one year and is specially set up to confuse the IRS]

with that sort of clout you can ignore taxes and poverty and write your own laws.
