Hugh,
There you go again talking about technical things. Yes, when we had to run
down into the engine room it was to give the pump a wee clap but usually it
was to give it a big thump with a hammer that was always left in a handy
place. Funnily the valve always stuck on the right of the side of the pump.
If it ever started up again just as you had arrived down on to the bottom
plates it still used to get a thump with the hammer for pissing you about. I
don't think that the modern pumps could take that treatment.

Weirs bilge pumps were odd beasts, so maybe a wee clap was never amiss with
some of them. We used to hit them with the "barring lever", failing which,
a hammer. I often tell people that 50% of engineering is knowing where to
hit things that won't go.
