Though the one in his engraving is often described as the first in the west, it was not - Durer didn't invent them. The square below was known to the Chinese, supposedly in the time of the (legendary) Emperor Yii, and supposedly it came on the back of a turtle from the Eiver Lo, but it existed long before western mathematics had progessed to that stage.

Apropos nothing much, a friend of a friend visited Stratford upon Avon recently, and in the local church the Bible was open at Psalm 46. The Bible was translated into the Authorised Version in 1611 at which time Shakespeare was 46 years old. If you look at Psalm 46 and count 46 words from verse one you light on the word "shake" and if you then count backwards 46 words from the last word of the last verse you light on the word "spear".
Hugh.
