Titan Salvage of the U.S. and Micoperi of Italy were awarded a partnership contract to refloate the capsized Costa Concordia. The salvage operation, worth $288 million, is anticipated to take approximately one year and is scheduled to begin in early May. Industry leader Smit in particular was seen as a strong contender as it had already removed the bunkers of the Costa Concordia. Smit undertook the pollution prevention contract in partnership with the Livorno based Neri towage and salvage group. The salvage operation, which requires regulatory approval, proposes sealing the gashes in the hull of the Costa Concordia and then refloating and righting the vessel with airbag assistance. Although the hull will be raised intact rather than broken up where the vessel lies, it is not yet clear if the operation will ultimately prove to be a salvage or wreck removal.
