political contributions are clearly defined. edwards accepted amounts over the $2800 limit and used them for purposes other than his election effort,
The payments at issue were used to cover Hunter’s rent, medical visits and prenatal expenses, in addition to travel and hotel accommodations to hide her from the public, according to the indictment.
This was while his wife was dying of breast cancer to which she eventually succumb.
however, as we know there are ways round this stumbling block such as super political action committees or Super PAC’s, over which the candidate is supposed to have no input or control.
the super pacs have really perverted the US electoral system such that the very rich can contribute as much as they want to a particular candidate, on the tacit understanding that when elected the candidate will [to put it simply] do their bidding [otherwise why contribute?] in other words one person or a group can buy the favours of a candidate.
its clearly unfair even politicians are against it, but the US Supreme court opined recently that it was OK.........................
as per your condign penalty remark, we trust the punishment fits the crime!

Federal Election Act
The Federal Election Act limits the amount individuals may contribute to candidates. The most an individual could contribute in the 2008 presidential primary was $2,300.

Edwards accepted about $725,000 from one person and more than $200,000 from another, according to the indictment.

The payments at issue were used to cover Hunter’s rent, medical visits and prenatal expenses, in addition to travel and hotel accommodations to hide her from the public, according to the indictment.

Edwards emerged on the national scene in 1998 when, with little experience in politics, he defeated North Carolina Republican Senator Lauch Faircloth. Shortly after being sworn into office, the Senate’s Democratic leaders tapped him to help handle the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

Colin,

Six weeks? Lots of money for lawyers, etc. As you say, a cheating bastard, but I can't see what there is that merits the rather condign penalties quoted. How does one tell a legal campaign contribution from an illegal one?

Hugh.
