It's an even bigger minefield when you take into account variations in pronunciation within the UK.

Where I come from, "verse" does not rhyme with "worse", nor does "heard" with "word".  "Tear" may rhyme with "prayer", but sometimes it may not, and similarly with "speak" and "streak". I have my great great grandfather's workbook (he was a cabinetmaker), and from his spelling I can see how he pronounced some words, eg "flooar" for "floor", and "screwis" for "screws". He lived in Dumbarton for some years, but most of his life was in Stirling".  He died in 1903.  In his poem, To A Mouse, Burns rhymes "agley" with "joy", which would indicate that he pronounced them similarly.
