Hugh,
In Australia when I went to use my HNC as a prerequisite I was told that 
as it was more than 6 years old it was no longer considered valid by the 
council of studies

I see on the other site a message from a member who has a "lapsed" 
master's certificate.  I had a close look at my 2E/Os certificate 
(issued in 1958) and, try as I might, I can see nothing on it about it 
lapsing. Is there something I should know?
