Obama Outlines Plan for Deeper U.S.-Australia Military Ties

CANBERRA, Australia—President Barack Obama arrived in Australia on Wednesday, promising deeper U.S. engagement in the Asia-Pacific region and announcing a plan to boost the U.S. military presence on the continent.

The military agreement will put 250 Marines in Darwin by mid-2012, creating a permanent U.S. military presence on the nation's remote north coast, and the number of troops will increase to 2,500 over time. The longtime allies also agreed to closer cooperation between their air forces, with more rotations of U.S. aircraft through northern Australia.
