The last of the $1.7 billion amphibious assault ships – built in new orleans by HI Industries;
Passenger ship “Queen Mary 2” built recently in France – cost $800 million.
So and assault ship [not a warship] costs more than TWICE as much as a luxury liner.................................?
mmmmm – interesting

The House on Wednesday rejected an amendment by Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, that would have barred the operators of Avondale Shipyard from receiving federal funds to cover relocation costs related to the facility's planned 2013 closing.

Rep. Cedric Richmond
Huntington Ingalls Industries, a spinoff of Northrop Grumman, has previously requested up to $310 million under a program that covers restructuring costs related to consolidations that produce long-term savings to the Defense Department. The application was rejected, but the company has said it plans to reapply.

"I disagree with Huntington Ingalls' decision, but I respect this is America, and they have a right to do that," Richmond said of the planned closing and elimination of more than 5,000 jobs. "But I have a right to be upset and try to block federal dollars going to them. That is $310 million going to a company for quitting. That's not the American way."

But the measure failed 246-177, with some members arguing that Congress shouldn't intervene in a process that hasn't officially begun. The company said it's planning to close Avondale, and consolidate ship building operations in Mississippi and Virginia, after the last of the $1.7 billion amphibious assault ships are completed for the Navy.
