you had me worried there for awhile, frank
sultan is on military road, gosport. portsmouth road leads out of lee-on-solent and turns into privett road. military road forks off privett.
I don’t know the history of sultan so you may be right about gunwharf quay, however there is no wharf within miles of the present location of sultan.
as you say – raleigh is along way from sultan in cornwall.

Colin,
maybe I should look these things up before I write them I now see that HMS Raleigh is in Cornwall so it couldn't have been that, even though I was evacuated to Cornwall

Colin,
I am now totally confused just had a look at google maps I can now see why you lived in Lee on Solent while attending HMS Sultan, the place I remember as HMS Sultan is now called Gunwharf Quays maybe its just me loosing it
Have a very vague recollection of going to a orphans xmas party at a navel base where Sultan is now, Im sure it was a shore training establishment HMS Raleigh comes to mind, but obliviously the mists of time play tricks as they say
