Hitting things with a hammer to cause them to straighten up and behave was a standard BI engine room dodge.  The Weirs steam pumps even had a little knob cast on to indicate to the less intelligent whereon to strike.  Electrically driven pumps didn't respond to the hammer technique, nor did the main engine or boilers.
