I have kindle 3 and it is big enough to read easily, yet small enough to put in an inside pocket- just a real useful size.
yer average tablet is just too big to be usefully pocketable.
there seems to be no way of carrying a 10” tablet outside without looking dorky.....................

don't think its the price so much, as the battery lasts for weeks and they are easier to read, hold and load
