I suspect this originated in the US of A, where a knowledge of ethnicity and geography is lacking - they still think England is the UK and we all live in quaint thatched cottages with roses round the door, mostly in the Home Counties.  Arab does not equal Muslim, though most Arabs are Muslim, and Muslim does not equal Arab.  Historically, the Arabs are Semites, as are the Jews.
