The last few years it was very noticeable if you boarded a Calcutta crewed ship, as the ship was in a poor condition, due to no work being done by the crew.  They did the minimum, just taking the ship from A to B.  The Officers were not much better, they would always saying they were busy ( doing nothing !)

I would add that the Chinese ships were the same,  You would see their ships in the Panama Canal still partly covered in grain dust after leaving New Orleans four days before.  Obviously hoping for a big wave to do the washing away !  These were ships with Chinese Officers, the subsidiary that I worked for, managed from HK, the Chinese crew worked like a normal crew.
