yo frank
appreciate the info - fyi -- with the use of the program ‘teamviewer’ and suitable access passwords, I am able to view and access the contents of my desk top top pc running w7 and my macmini running snow leopard remotely from my iPad. other computers do not have access to my computers. remote assistance has never been on.
I know remote access can be gained using ‘remote assistance’ between pc’s and the facility is available between apples, iPads, etc.
what I am on about is access between pc’s and apples – there maybe more ways to skin a cat, I use teamviewer.
off to s’pore, have a great time you lucky lad.

Colin,
If you don't want other computers to access your computer have you tried
turning off "Remote assistance" in system properties?.
I'm off to Singapore on the 14th for a 8days mind you looking at all the
bills the postman brought today I may just keep on going
frank
