In 1949, when I was a new apprentice with John G Kincaid, Greenock, awaiting the start of the next session of the apprentice school at the Arthur Street Works, I was assigned to a journeyman so as to keep me out of mischief and danger. I worked on triple expansion steam engines for the Scindia Line for a couple of months, then abandoned steam for ever when I moved to East Hamilton Street after the 3 months in the school.  The steam engines were turned on air for 24 hours before dismantling for sending to India, so they predate the Tata cars by a few years.  I grant the air was supplied to the turning engine, but that's a minor point.
