I quote Robert Graves : "Though commonly mistaken for a Muslim sect, the Sufis are at home in all religions."

Their way of thought long predates both Christianity and Islam, and they have been persecuted by both religions, sometimes cruelly.  One thing they don't do is worship saints - they don't worship anybody. They are not a religious sect, they are a way of thinking that heavily influenced European philosophy in the Middle Ages.  Omar Khayyam was one.
