Their way of thought long predates both Christianity and Islam, and they have been persecuted by both religions, sometimes cruelly. One thing they don't do is worship saints - they don't worship anybody. They are not a religious sect, they are a way of thinking that heavily influenced European philosophy in the Middle Ages. Omar Khayyam was one.
