the education act 1944 raised the school leaving age to 15 from 14. [I remember it well]
in 1899 the school leaving age became 12. [don’t remember that so well]
blacksmith and general engineer – luv it.

Have since had it pointed out to me that the school leaving age in 
England was 14 up to 1947 and not as I remembered 12, Mind you I still 
managed to start my first apprenticeship as a "Blacksmith and general 
engineer" at 14 because my birthday fell in the summer holidays
