John,

I believe/disbelieve all of it, but I had experience of something similar. In Odense, Denmark, 1965, we bought a Bang & Olufsen stereo radio, the Beomaster 900. While attaching a length of aerial wire (uninsulated), I managed to short a bunch of objects sticking out of the back of it, and it died. I took it along to the shop I'd got it from, and in due course I called in to pick it up. They'd loaned us a brand new radio of a different type to tide us over, and I handed that back in. So, I asked about the guarantee and the repair bill. They shrugged and smiled, "What repair?". And that was that.

Hugh.
