Mike,

Lasers apart - being British, I cannot read stuff like, "The Navy just set a new world record", without hearing my high school English teacher complain that it is an incomplete past perfect.  Not only that, I don't know about elsewhere, but as it stands, it means the Navy suddenly said, "Eff it all, we're going to set a new world record, so there!" I get pissed of with Americanisms.
