Mike,

Of course wire mesh could hurt a burglar, and so could a rap on the mouth with a length of wood, to give only one alternative example from the set of "all the things that could hurt a burglar". Any sensible court would ask a burglar, "And what was you a doin' of, when you was assaulted by wire mesh?" I've got a solution - place a small notice near the window, containing instructions for the safe removal of the mesh (in a selection of languages) - that should satisfy even the most raving PC addict.

A moral tale by way of illustration. A few years ago, I was asked by the Congegational Board of our church to to meet a couple of police at the church regarding some questions of security, particularly how to stop vandals getting onto the roof. Some ladies on the Board had been aghast at the very notion of stringing up barbed wire to keep the little dears off the roof, and the rest of us could think on no other solution, hence the police security advisors. The police didn't fancy barbed wire, their suggestion was razor wire, appropriately placed, back from the edge, and lots and lots of brown sticky gunge on areas where there were technical problems with razor wire. That'll keep the buggers off, they said, but put up a notice saying what you've done. I asked what size of notice - they advised one no bigger than a postcard, on some window, would do fine. The aghastness in the Board was greater than before - they voted not to follow the police advice, and they had no alternative plan, so I resigned as Clerk and from the Board forthwith and left them to it. Now the chickens have come home to roost. The roof is condemned - water ingress through vandalism to blame. The roof will not be repaired, and the building is to come down, and will be replaced by a much smaller church if funds can be raised. Being the authors of their own problems, and given the present financial climate, the Board will only be given limited financial help from the C of S.

Hugh.
