Colin,

As you say there are defined Routes on both sides of the Strait, the main problem is crossing traffic, entering/leaving Gib Bay with the busy port of Algeciras on the W.side of the Bay.

East bound,the route is on the S. side.  West bound, on the N. side of the Straits.

I was discussing the possible cause of the grounding with a friend who asked, “ are there weird/severe currents there. Seems like plenty of room to get through? A quick trip to Google Earth indicates the straits are 10 miles wide. Anything tricky other than getting in line with traffic?”
 
would navigators familiar with the area care to enlighten me.
