Magic squares were known to the Chinese as far back as 650BC, and to other civilisations from then till Dürer's time. Dürer, apart from his artistic side, was a geometrician - the magic square he drew was probably the first ever shown to a European audience. They are fascinating puzzles, but I'm not aware of any practical use for them.
