We were never issued with hammers, or spanners for that matter. Journeymen had wooden tool boxes that sat around the place - apprentices used what was in these. In the apprentice school we were introduced to hand hammers that were nominally ours for 3 months - these weighed 4.6 lbs, or something that sounded like that. There was nothing smaller - those bigger were 14 and 28 lbs.
