I think they are "concept" images.  Most ship design is conservative, ie, much of it is derived from previous vessels.  Blank sheet design is bloody expensive, and can take forever, and it doesn't start with artists' impressions.  The design of an aircraft carrier would centre around the needs of the aircraft when they are not landing and taking off, ie, inside the hull, and the easist way to estimate that is to look at another aircraft carrier.  Drillships are centred around the storage and manipulation of lower riser package, BOP, drill string and casing.  And so on.
