John,

I remember these call centres with actual people on the other end of the phone. What happened to them? I am with BP, and I suffer interminable broadband "dropouts".  There is no phone number for help, just list after interlinked list of handy hints on how to fix BPs problems without bothering them.  They are all in English, so I am humbly grateful for that crumb of comfort, though none of them work. It is possible to send an email to them, if (a) one can find the link, and (b) one wishes to waste time sending unacknowledged emails.

I recall talking to people of all accents about this and that problem, often to no effect, since (a) my problem wasn't on their list, and (b) every word had to be said twice - and I had the same experience when talking to people furth of the UK, though to a lesser extent.  I once had a pleasant chat for 15 minutes with a young fellow on the night shift in India, about cricket, Bombay, and other matters, before he diagnosed a problem with my firewall settings.

On Polish incomers - a lady in Glasgow engaged a Polish plumber who had advertised himself as such. While he was under the sink with spanners, she told him he didn't sound all that Polish.  He confessed he was a Glaswegian plumber, not even remotely Polish. Such was the reputation of Polish plumbers for speedy and efficient work, he felt it necessary to get on the bandwagon.

Hugh.
