There are two aspects to this.  There is the general feeling of many that, 
as one said, offenders are "little bastards" who would be nane the waur o a 
guid kicking.  And there is the particular feeling of someone who has been 
on the receiving end of an assault, a burglary, or a broken window or a 
vandalised car - or even arson.

The second of these is the more important, but I don't see it discussed 
anywhere.
