hugh

where is the fountain of stupidity?

it must have started in some seat of higher learning and likely by a prof in the pay of the former soviet union.
for who ever it was appears to have been fairly successful in contributing to the demise of british industry and business.

In the 80s, when the powers that be decided to sell off the shipbuilding and marine engineering industries, we saw strange people coming into JG Kincaid - lawn mower salesmen, wee lassies newly left IBM who knew naught of ordering anything by less than the hundred gross, and people with a paint fetish, etc. I'll come to the former in a minute, and life is too short to go into the etc. The wee lassie was employed as a Buyer. The Buying and Estimating Depts were promotions from the DO in the days when the board of directors, not to mention most of the foremen, all had Chief's tickets and had served their time in Kincaid as fitters. Even leading her by the nose didn't help, so life became hard. The lawn mower man was he who offered to bring a B&W crankshaft up from Tilbury in his car - I say no more than that he was employed as a manager. The paint man was more senior, and he caused white and yellow lines to painted on the shop floors, with notices advising all to walk to one side of them or other. Apparently this had to do with safety, but people were legitimately on both sides of them, so which side was the safer? We never found out - we ignored it all. He it was who decided to form a department for Interface Coordination. This caused a rash of spoof notices to appear on notice boards - I posted one that was mistaken for the real one. Margaret, the DO typist who initiated me into word processors so as to avoid having to type things for me, applied to be an Interface Coordinator and was successful. She upped sticks and moved to the front office. Some time later our paths crossed, and out of curiousity I asked her what particular facet of Interface Coordination she was responsible for. "I type," she said. So the Maersk situation doesn't surprise me at all.
