Thursday,

Spitfire Women, a fine programme on BBC2 this evening, part of the Battle of Britain anniversary series. This dealt with the women who delivered planes from factory to airfield during WW2. It was slightly surreal listening to very elderly ladies recounting how they used to do rolls and whatever in Spitfires. One lady pointed out that they delivered whatever type came up, so a Hurricane and a Lancaster on the same day wasn't unusual. They had a book stuck down a flying boot that could be used a handy reference for takeoff and landing peculiarities. The same lady reckoned she had delivered over 50 different types of plane. "Now," she said, "I'm trying to get through old age." Well worth watching.

Hugh.
