Hurricane and Spitfire engineering papers republished on Battle of Britain’s 70th Anniversary

United Kingdom, August 2010 - To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology has published a special issue containing three fascinating articles that first appeared in the journal in 1939. The papers detail the development and construction of the iconic Hurricane and Spitfire, and, interestingly for the time, of aircraft used by the German Luftwaffe.

These articles present a unique insight into the aircraft that played such a crucial role during the historic battle in 1940. Their republication is an opportunity to reflect on the contribution made not just by “The Few”, but by all those involved in the design and production of these machines.

The special section appears in Volume 82, Issue 3 of Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited. It leads with two articles that initially appeared in Volume 11, in 1939. One striking aspect is the revelation of details about structural topology, bill-of-material and manufacturing techniques for the British Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft types, which would now be considered highly classified information.

The third paper, originally published after the outbreak of hostilities, gives a review of known and emerging aircraft used by the German Luftwaffe. Even after seeing it in action in the Spanish Civil War, little was known about the Me 109, the Luftwaffe’s standard fighter at the time.

The Battle of Britain was fought between 10th July and 31 October 1940. The official Battle of Britain day is celebrated on 15th September.
