John,

Standard pronunciation my arse ! These people want get off THEIR arses and away from the groves of academe for a wee while. I'll give you what's standard where I come from.

"says" can be "sez" or as in prays. No sleep is lost over it.

"ate" is always as in rate, and always has been.

"harass" has always been harass, and even titters of laughter when hearing it are not advised, especially in Glasgow.

"garage" has mostly always been garridge, though people in Kilmacolm might pronounce it in a faux French way.

The additional syllable in mischievous is not uncommon.

"j" has always been pronounced as in eye.

"h" is pronounced itch on this side of the Clyde - I've never in my life heard it any other way. The late Tom Gallacher worked in front of me in Odense, the better to hear and record my tales of life on the south side for recycling as fiction and drama. He lived in Rhu on the north side and had only ever seen us from a distance. One thing he could never get over was the way we pronounce "h".

Etc.

Hugh.
