Colin,

My wife says dismantling half the ship to load torpedoes doesn't sound right.  But what do I know? (she says after a pause for effect.).  In some surface ships, war and merchant, with low headroom, the exigencies of design can mean major removals to allow removal of an engine in drydock, but not in connection with such as the above.  When working on the design of RMS Newton, asked how the hell I was supposed to arrange for removal of an engine (medium speed) as per the spec.  Forget about it, the MOD said.  But, by God, we had to redesign valves so that their internals wouldn't rattle and make a noise.
