All they have to do (I've read the books) is take a few bags of trade goods with them - coloured beads, old rifles, bibles, photos of Queen Victoria, and the like.  Johnny foreigner would queue up to enlist.

What do I make of "Only Britain goes into trade negotiations wearing the cross of St George amid choruses of Hail Mary," ?  Christ knows.
