Thursday afternoon spent a very enjoyable couple of hours looking at all the photos from the Shackleton Exhibition at Merseyside Maritime Museum. The display was organised by the American Museum of Natural History and comprises photos taken by Frank Hurley, an Australian photographer who accompanied the Antarctic explorer and photos from the Royal Geographical Institute.

If the exhibition comes to a Museum near you, I can heartily recommend visiting it.

One of Hurley's famous photos shows the ENDURANCE stuck in the ice and illuminated. He did this by using a timed exposure and went around the ship on the ice, shining a torch light on the rigging, about 20 times from different positions.

Certainly in those days the ships were made of wood and the men of iron !
