LETTER TO THE EDITOR—MAKE TIME TO PAUSE ON REMEMBRANCE DAY
 
Dear Editor
 
Marking Remembrance Day is an opportunity for Australians to take a moment to reflect in silence.
 
This sacred tradition has been kept alive since 1919 and with your support it will be passed onto the next generation.
 
Remembrance Day honours the contribution of all who have been touched by war, including the more than 102,000 Australians who have lost their lives in wars, conflicts and peace operations over the past century.
 
It is also a time to acknowledge those who continue to live with the physical and mental scars of their service, consider the families of those lost, and the contribution of those who continue to serve Australia today.
 
This year Remembrance Day is especially significant because it marks the 60th anniversary of the commencement of the Korean War.
 
More than 17,000 Australian servicemen and women served with pride and distinction in Korea.
 
To recognise this important anniversary, funding has been provided for the restoration of a Korean War memorial, various commemorative events held across Australia and a new edition of a book which covers the history of Australia’s involvement in the Korean War and a special Remembrance Day poster featuring a veteran of the Korean War has been produced.
 
To commemorate the service and sacrifice of all those lost in wars and conflicts and those who continue to serve us in foreign lands today, I encourage all Australians, wherever they may be, to mark Remembrance Day.
 
Please pause for one minute’s silence at 11:00 am on 11 November and wear a red poppy and help ensure that their service and sacrifice will be remembered.
